South Wall - West Section

[SMPPA]

This section covers the section of the pond bank from the sluice to the corner of Dolphin Creek  The existing clay-fill stone-clad bank has been strengthened with a facing of rock-filled gabions capped with a concrete strip. It is thought that the stone had been brought in as ballast in unloaded grain barges which were placed and cemented together.

In the early 1990's the South-West corner of the bank was breached. The SMPPA with the Conservancy repaired the bank with gabions and a Terram mat behind to protect the bank from further erosion.

The 2003 repairs carried out by SMPPA volunteers filled some of the gabions that had settled and strengthened the inside face.
